The Dallas Cowboys officially signed veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott this last week to a contract for the upcoming NFL season. The long time Cowboy spent last season with the New England Patriots. I’m sure there are some mixed emotions for all the Dallas Cowboys fans out there.

Nobody is arguing that Ezekiel Elliott is one of the best running backs to ever put on a Cowboys uniform. The question is; however, does he still have enough left in the tank to be productive at this stage in his career?

Personally, I don’t think so. Elliott had several productive seasons in Dallas, but the last handful of seasons saw his production decline year after year. His last year in Dallas he averaged 3.8 yards per carry. By the way, that was dead last in the NFL that season for yards per carry among starting running backs. So, how did Zeke perform with the Patriots. Even worse, averaging only 3.5 yards per carry.

The Cowboys had a huge hole in the running game with the departure of Tony Pollard in free agency. Now, the combination of Elliott, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn will be at the helm. That doesn’t sound too exciting to me.

Let us not forget that the Cowboys offensive line got worse over the off season as well. Tenured Cowboy and future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith left in free agency. Pro Bowl Center Tyler Biadasz gone as well! The Cowboys did address some holes on the O-Line during the draft, but unproven rookies cannot replace Pro-Bowlers and Future Hall of Famers.

I’ll say it…Elliott should not be back with the Cowboys. This is a desperation move by management to try and save face for what has been an awful offseason. The Cowboys might actually be worse with Elliott on their roster. I don’t see this ending well.
