Who Will Win the Jake Guentzel Sweepstakes?

Authority Athletics already wrote about how the Pittsburgh Penguins should start rebuilding for the future. The next player that should be moved out is none other than pending unrestricted free agent Jake Guentzel.

With Elias Lindholm already being dealt, Guentzel becomes the coveted piece on the trade block. As a result, several teams are going to be involved in the trade sweepstakes. The price won’t come cheap either; the Penguins are reportedly asking for two first round picks or a 1st rounder and “A” level prospect at a minimum. With the number of teams vying for his services, the asking price may even go up.

Moving Guentzel would be a great start on a rebuild for the Penguins. Unfortunately, the team has reached a level of mediocrity and needs to get younger. Obtaining a minimum of two quality prospects should help shape the future of the organization.

So where does Guentzel end up? If I was a betting man, I would say the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights moved captain Mark Stone to Long Term Injured Reserve and now all of a sudden have a lot of cap room to play around with. If I’m GM Kyle Dubas, here is what I am asking for: 2024 1st Round Pick, 2024 3rd Round Pick, and Defenseman Lukas Cormier. The Pens would end up with two quality draft picks to work with as well as Cormier who was the leading point getter among defenseman for two straight seasons in the QMJHL. That’s a pretty good haul if you ask me!
