Welcome home Mitch Haniger! The Seattle Mariners acquired Haniger from the San Francisco Giants on Friday in exchange for former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray. This is the second quality move by the Mariners in the last few weeks. Authority Athletics already wrote about the signing of Mitch Garver and how it will benefit the Mariners – Read that article here.
Haniger belongs in Seattle, plain and simple. In my opinion, the Mariners should have never let him walk in the first place. The Mariners decided not to resign the outfielder one year removed from a 39 Home Run / 100 RBI campaign. Haniger has always struggled with injuries and that was the case last year as well with the Giants. However, the Mariners can rotate him in with Mitch Garver as DH and limit his time in the outfield to hopefully increase his durability.
Here’s another benefit of the trade. The Mariners were able to rid themselves of the horrendous Robbie Ray contract. Ray is signed through the 2026 season and is due $73 million in that span. I thought the signing of Ray was risky when it was first made. Ray never quite worked out in Seattle and to be honest the M’s starting rotation was a bit crowded. The club has several young quality starting pitchers under team control and Ray was the odd man out.
I’m grading this an A for the Mariners!
