The Vancouver Canucks will likely look to bolster their lineup as the trade deadline approaches. Make sure to read our previous article on some of their potential roster needs. Authority Athletics already looked at Anthony Duclair as a potential fit in the forward group. Does Tyson Barrie make sense for the defense?
The Canucks defense is full of size and toughness with the likes of Nikita Zadorov, Carson Soucy, and Tyler Myers. However, some may say that the group lacks offensive ability. Quinn Hughes is excellent offensively and currently leads NHL defenseman in scoring. Filip Hronek also contributes and has 27 assists on the season. There is a steep drop off after those two players.
Tyson Barrie could help add another element to the lineup; some secondary scoring from the back end. Barrie is the epitome of an offensive defenseman and has reached 40 or more points 8 times in his career. He would easily jump right onto the 2nd powerplay unit and may be able to lessen the load on Hughes and Hronek when the Canucks are down in a game and pushing for offense.
Barrie is also a free agent at the end of the season. The Nashville Predators already gave his agent permission to seek out a trade to another club. As a result, he could likely be picked up for a mid-level prospect or 3rd round pick at the most. Sounds like low risk-high reward to me.
SHOULD THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS PURSUE TYSON BARRIE?
