The Rebuild of the Arizona Coyotes

The rebuild of the Arizona Coyotes is going way better than expected! The club is coming off an impressive come from behind victory over the Colorado Avalanche and is currently sitting in a wild card spot in the Western Conference. As the trade deadline approaches, management may be tempted to expedite the rebuild by acquiring veteran players for a playoff push. Here’s why they should do just the opposite…

The Coyotes need to learn from the 2013-14 Colorado Avalanche. That club hired Patrick Roy as their head coach and went from a bottom dweller the year prior to a playoff team. Believing that the team was close to competing, management traded away draft picks for veteran players and signed expensive free agents including Brad Stuart, Jarome Iginla, Alex Tanguay, Mikkel Bodker, and Francois Beauchemin. All this did however was set back the rebuild and forced the Avalanche to start all over a few years later.

The Coyotes should resist the urge to acquire veterans in a push for the playoffs. Instead, they should trade away their own veterans to acquire even more prospects and draft capital. If the Coyotes still make the playoffs, great! But the course of action should be to continue a slow and steady rebuild for the overall betterment of the franchise, even if it means missing the playoffs this season.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, Authority Athletics will examine the Coyotes roster and discuss who should stay and who should be traded away for the future. To start, let’s get the untouchables out of the way – Logan Cooley, Matias Maccelli, Michael Kesselring, J.J. Moser, and Clayton Keller are not going anywhere. Neither are prospects Dylan Guenther, Maveric Lamoureux, Conor Geekie, and Daniil But.

Everybody else should be fair game!

WHAT DO YOU THINK – SHOULD THE COYOTES GO ALL IN THIS YEAR OR TAKE THE SLOW AND STEADY APPROACH?
