The Olympics are Watered Down

The 2024 Summer Olympics are being hosted in Paris this year. The peak of athletic performance.  Representing your country against those representing their country.  Who is the best?  Who is willing to dedicate the time and sacrifice to be the best?  It doesn’t get more compelling for fans to watch these great athletic feats.  The problem is that the Olympics are watered down.  They’re just not the same as they used to be.  Let me explain.

Just imagine, you get home from work.  You have all your snacks and drinks ready to watch an evening of spectacular competition.  You settle in and turn on the TV to the Olympic games ready to be amazed.  The camera zooms in to the event.  You’re ready to cheer your country on as they get ready to compete in…artistic swimming?  Ok, so maybe artistic swimming isn’t your cup of tea.  You do some chores around the house waiting for the next event to come on.  Here it is!  You settle in again and watch as they announce…equestrian dressage?  Stay tuned because coming up next we have…sailing…then curling.

You slump in your chair and accept the fact that you’re going to watch an “athlete” ice bowl while their teammates frantically sweep or scrub the ice.  The Olympic medals are announced for equestrian dressage.  Great, someone won a medal because their horse looked good while they wore fancy clothes.  See, the Olympics are watered down.

What happened to the Olympics?  What happened to athletic contest (with emphasis on ATHLETIC).  Now I am by no means an Olympic athlete, far from it.  But I am a fan who appreciates competition and sport.  According to Forbes.com the 2018 Olympics had the lowest viewership since 1992.

I mean, beer pong can be fun, but I’d rather not have to endure watching it masquerade as an Olympic event.  Maybe you disagree.  Maybe I’m weird and everyone enjoys watching people wearing suits on horseback.  Hey, nothing against that hobby.  But my argument is that it’s insulting to call it an Olympic event compared to those that belong.

Let’s get back to the true meaning of the Olympics.  Greatly conditioned athletics giving their all in fantastic athletic feats all while representing the colors of their beloved countries.

What do you think?  Which events don’t belong in the Olympics?  Which events should be added?  Comment below!
