The San Diego Padres are currently 2nd place in the NL West. That may not be too surprising with the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr, Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts on the roster. But the emergence of Jurickson Profar may be the biggest reason why the Padres are having success early in the season.
Jurickson Profar has been a journey man thus far in his MLB career. He was signed as an international free agent all the way back in 2009 and came up through the Texas Rangers farm system. After several seasons with the Rangers organization, Profar spent time with the Oakland Athletics, these same Padres, and the Colorado Rockies. He spent time in both the minors and majors but never seemed to develop into the player many thought he would become.
For those of you who are not aware, Profar was once a highly touted prospect. He was once listed as the Rangers 2nd best prospect and ranked in the top 100 of all MLB prospects by 2011. He even appeared in the 2012 All-Star Futures game.

Fast forward to today and Profar is finally living up to expectations. On the season he is leading the Padres in a plethora of offensive categories including batting average (.328), on base percentage (.409), slugging percentage (.522), hits (44) and RBI’s (27). He is second on the club in home runs with 6. Remember those names I listed above that also play for the Padres. That is an impressive stat line. Those stats not only put him on top of the Padres but are comparable to top hitters in the National League.
Folks, we are witnessing first-hand the emergence of Jurickson Profar.
