After several days of speculation, the Colorado Avalanche announced that they officially signed Zach Parise to a one-year deal.
So – does Parise actually make sense for the Avalanche?
Absolutely! The Zach Parise signing is very similar to the Tomas Tatar experiment earlier in the season. However, Parise fits the Avalanche play style much better than Tatar ever did. Parise’s skating is better – He is not the fastest skater in the league but should be able to keep up with the tempo the Avalanche like to play at. Parise is also tenacious around the puck and is an above average forechecker.

The main reason the move makes sense for the Avalanche is how it will impact their depth. Parise will immediately slot in somewhere in the middle six. The Avalanche likely won’t want to break up the Colton/Wood/O’Connor line so Parise would likely replace Val Nichushkin in the top six in the short term. Parise has the offensive upside to make it work. Although he is not the player he used to be, Parise did score 21 goals last season with the New York Islanders while playing limited minutes.
Long term, the move makes even more sense for the Colorado Avalanche. If Nichushkin and perhaps Landeskog are able to return for the playoffs, Parise is pushed down the depth chart. Now all of a sudden, the Avalanche are looking at scratching Andrew Cogliano and/or Fredrik Olofsson. Injuries always happen in the playoffs and having Cogliano or Olofsson able to step into the lineup would be a huge benefit for the Avalanche.
