The Edmonton Oilers vs the Dallas Stars…Winner goes to the Stanley Cup Finals! The series might not be as appealing as the Eastern Conference Finals matchup, but it should still be an entertaining series between two great clubs. But who will come out on top?
There is a clear winner when we discuss goaltending. This is one of the major weaknesses of the Oilers. The combination of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard does not even come close to Jake Oettinger of the Dallas Stars. This is a clear advantage for Dallas but I’m curious to see how Skinner will perform in the series. The Oilers can obviously outscore some of these issues, but he has to be able to keep the games close.
How about defense? Once again, a big advantage for Dallas. Chris Tanev has been spectacular so far in the playoffs. The upcoming free agent is using his performance this post season to cash in on a new deal this summer. Miro Heiskanen is an outstanding defenseman and outplayed superstar Cale Makar for much of the Star’s second round matchup. Evan Bouchard is fantastic but after him the depth of the Oiler’s defense really takes a hit.
The question of who has the best top end talent is an easy one to answer. Edmonton has the clear advantage with the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Instead of top end talent, the Stars are built on depth. The Stars are deeper in their forward core than the Oilers but McDavid and Draisaitl have the ability to essentially win games by themselves.
So, who comes out on top? I’m taking the Dallas Stars in 7 games.
