Authority Athletics recently proposed that the NHL should adopt the PWHL’s penalty killing rule. You can read that article here. To summarize, the PWHL rule states that if a penalized team scores while shorthanded, the penalty is officially over. That got us thinking – what other rule changes should the NHL implement?

Let’s consider this one…treat all penalties like majors. Currently, if a player is assessed a 5-minute major, the shorthanded team is on the hook for the full 5 minutes. Let’s do the same thing with minor penalties. If a player commits a hooking or tripping penalty, they should be in the box for the full 2 minutes regardless of how many goals are scored. No longer should a powerplay goal negate the remaining time on the penalty.

There seems to be more and more comebacks in the NHL. This rule change will take that a step further. Think about it – your team is down 3-0 and are going on 2-minute powerplay. Maybe they net two goals during that time. Leads would never be safe!

WHAT DO YOU THINK? WOULD YOU SUPPORT THIS RULE CHANGE?
