The best players in their prospective sports gathered together and competing against each other – sounds like must watch TV, right? Wrong! All-Star games across all major sports have completely lost their relevance.
Problem #1 – All-Star games have turned into popularity contests. Each year, a handful of deserving players are left off of rosters. Unfortunately, this happens across all major sports. Anybody remember when John Scott of the Arizona Coyotes made the NHL All-Star Game in 2016? Scott was an enforcer and had not even come close to earning the nod. Let’s look at some other examples across major sports:
The NHL tried to increase engagement in this year’s all-star festivities by offering the winner of the skills competition a prize of 1 million dollars. That didn’t stop Nikita Kucherov from haphazardly participating and getting booed by the fans for his effort.
I remember when Sean Taylor completely annihilated punter Brian Moorman in the 2007 Pro Bowl. Unfortunately, Pro Bowls no longer operate that way. Instead, the players play flag football. FLAG FOOTBALL! No thank you!
The NBA All-Star game is no better! The game has turned into a game filled with no defense, alley oops, and players taking shots from half court. Let’s not even get started on the dunk contest which has completely lost its appeal. Gone are the glory days of dunk contests involving Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Vince Carter.
I think I speak for many when I say I have had enough of all-star events. Leagues should consider alternatives if they want to showcase their best talent.
