The Dallas Stars are in Denver tonight to take on the Colorado Avalanche in the 4th game of their second-round playoff series. Simply put, it’s gut check time for the Colorado Avalanche.
The Avalanche won game 1 of the series in Dallas and took over home ice advantage for the rest of the series. They unfortunately gave it right back to Dallas with a loss in game 3.
The Avalanche cannot go back to Dallas for game 5 trailing 3 games to 1. If Colorado loses game 4, this series is essentially over. The Avalanche need to treat this as a game 7.
What do the Avalanche need to win game 4? They need more from their stars. Nathan Mackinnon has been good, but not great. He needs to have one of those games where he dominates like he did in the regular season. Mikko Rantanen has been non-existent. We recently wrote how Mikko Rantanen is the most frustrating superstar in the NHL, feel free to read that article. The Avalanche need way more for Rantanen. Avs fans are growing frustrated with the lack of production and sometimes effort from the power forward. Cale Makar is a generational talent and needs to play like one. He has been held scoreless the last 2 games and that needs to change if the Avalanche are going to win game 4.
Lastly, they need a solid performance from goaltender Alexander Georgiev. Georgiev has been good this series and was one of the reasons game 3 was competitive. However, he will need to find a way to outplay Jake Oettinger on the other end of the ice.
The Dallas Stars can take a stranglehold on the series tonight in Denver. I for one am curious as to what Avalanche team will show up.
