Alexandar Georgiev will be on his way shortly to the NHL All-Star game. He leads the league in starts and wins, but diving deeper into his stats, the numbers are not really that impressive. Do the Colorado Avalanche have a goalie problem?
Georgiev has appeared in 41 games for the Avalanche and has posted a 2.95 GAA and .897 save percentage. The save percentage in particular is concerning. Numbers aside, let’s talk about the eye test. Having watched all Avalanche games this year, there has been too many occasions where Georgiev has let in soft goals. The team is winning but primarily by outscoring their goaltending problems. Typical Avalanche wins read 6-4, 5-3, and 5-4.
Is Georgiev the answer in net for the Colorado Avalanche. At this point, I think he has to be. There is little the club can do in season to replace him. Instead, the Avalanche should focus on obtaining a Bonafide NHL goalie to serve as a backup plan if Georgiev falters down the stretch.
Two names come to mind: Marc Andre Fleury and Jake Allen. If I had my choice, I would take Fleury but either of these goalies should help stabilize the goaltending position for the Avalanche. I would hate for a club built for the Stanley Cup to falter because of the lack of sufficient goaltending. McFarland and Sakic need to do everything in their power to solidify the position.
