Blake Griffin Announces His Retirement

Clippers at Wizards 12/14/13

Blake Griffin officially announced his retirement on his Instagram account this week which got me thinking – does he belong in the Hall of Fame?

Let’s start with his awards and accomplishments. Griffin was a 6x NBA All-Star, Slam Dunk Contest Winner, and Rookie of the Year. In his career, he made the All-NBA Second Team 3x and the All-NBA Third Team 2x. The one thing he never won was a NBA Championship.

Awards aside, let’s discuss what kind of player Griffin was. Simply put, Griffin was one of the most exciting players of his era. After being drafted 1st overall, Griffin was a prominent member of the “Lob City” Los Angeles Clippers teams. That team was excellent and contenders every single year, but could never quite get over the hump. Griffin was explosive and fans loved his massive dunks!

Unfortunately, injuries robbed Griffin of his explosiveness in the last half of his career. He spent time with the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and Boston Celtics where he had to transform into a different kind of player. He was still serviceable but gone were the “Lob City” days of his youth.

If Griffin stayed healthy, he is a sure lock Hall of Famer in my opinion. However, that wasn’t the case and is why I believe Griffin will come up short and end up in the “Hall of Very Good”.
