A Losing Culture in Seattle

Anybody tune into the Mariners @ Brewers game on Sunday? As a Mariners fan, I watched every painful second of it. For those of you that didn’t watch, the Mariners lost 12-4 to Milwaukee.

Listen – those type of games are going to happen over the course of a 162 game season. But, something really stuck out to me while watching the game; How losing is acceptable for the Seattle Mariners.

Here is what I am talking about. Top of the 9th, Mariners down 12-2. Dominic Canzone hits an absolute moonshot of a 2 run home run making the score 12-4. Big deal right, I mean they are still down by 8. Well, not for Mariners players. The dugout let out a notable scream after contact and Canzone circled the bases taking time to make celebratory gestures to his teammates in the bullpen. The camera cuts to Julio Rodriguez and Logan Gilbert who are laughing and visibly impressed by the homer. Canzone touches home plate and is given the Mariner’s Trident to celebrate with the rest of his team in the dugout.

Did the team forget they were still down by 8 runs with only one out remaining? As a Mariners fan I was embarrassed by the display. In fact, I shouted “What are you doing?” to the television. Unfortunately, only my wife and kids could hear.

This display just demonstrates that the Mariners are okay with losing and until that culture changes the Mariners will remain one of the most underperforming franchises in all of professional sports.

  1. Wouldn’t you think that has alot to do with are great manager. He has about as much excitement as a dead rock. This problem has to be changed or this team will never be a great winner.
