The Handling of Goalie Penalties

It doesn’t happen often but every once in a while, an NHL goaltender takes a penalty. Usually, it is a trip or an interference and occasionally if you are lucky, you see a fighting major. What happens when a goalie takes a penalty? They remain in the game and a skater from the team serves the penalty on behalf of the goalie. I don’t see how that is fair!

Our proposed rule change is a simple one but could potentially have a major impact on gameplay. Goalies need to serve their own penalties! If a goalie takes a tripping penalty, they should have to sit in the penalty box like the rest of the team. No, I’m not suggesting that the team must play with an empty net. The backup goaltender can come in to replace the starter AND another skater can still sit in the box to provide the offensive team a powerplay.

Think about how exciting it would be to watch a cold goaltender having to come in and immediately face a powerplay!
