The Jonathan Drouin experiment has turned into a huge success for the Colorado Avalanche. The club has some magic when it comes to turning around the career of struggling NHL players. Look no further than Val Nichushkin. Now, the Av’s are doing the exact same thing with Jonathan Drouin.
Drouin signed this season with the Avalanche for 1 year and a meager $ 825,000. From Drouin’s perspective, it was obviously a bet on himself that he could turn his career around. Despite a slow start, Drouin has done just that. He is up to 9 goals and 12 assists for a total of 21 points in 39 games. This after notching only 1 point through the team’s first 10 games.
Clubs around the league are likely taking notice and as a result Drouin could see a significant salary increase next season if he hits the open market. The Avalanche need to step in and put an end to that possibility. Drouin is a perfect fit with the Avs. Not only does he have great chemistry with former junior linemate Nathan Mackinnon, but Drouin just fits so nicely into the Avalanche play style. He skates well, has great hands, and has been an invaluable member of the powerplay.
Personally, I watch every single Avalanche game. There has been a stretch of about 20 games now where Drouin looks to be one of the best 3-4 players on the ice.
The Avs need to start contract extension talks now. Granted, Drouin could likely get more money playing elsewhere next season, but I don’t see why he would want to leave with the resurrection he has had in Colorado. Drouin definitely won’t sign the same contract terms, but a 3-year deal in the $3 million AAV range would make a lot of sense for the Avs.
