Authority Athletics recently discussed how the Seattle Mariners off-season has been a huge disappointment. However, the club finally made a decision that makes a ton of sense! Signing Mitch Garver to a two-year deal is a great signing for the Mariners. Here’s why…
Garver is a quality offensive player. Last year, he hit .270 with 19 home runs and 50 RBI’s. The Mariners had exactly 2 players that hit .270 or better last year: Julio Rodriguez and Tom Murphy. By the way, Murphy only appeared in 47 games, so his average is gathered from a small sample size. Garver also comes with some power in his bat. 19 home runs doesn’t exactly blow you away, but he did have a 31 home run season in 2019 with the Minnesota Twins while only appearing in 93 games.
Garver should provide steady and consistent leadership. Garver had a clutch hit last year in the postseason and played a big part on a Texas Rangers team that went on to win the world series. That type of experience could be invaluable to a Mariners club that is trying to establish a winning culture.
Best of all, Mitch Garver gives the Mariners roster flexibility. He can serve as the primary DH while also serving as a backup catcher and first baseman. This allows the Mariners to utilize 1 player (Garver) to essentially cover three roster spots. Look for Garver to be an everyday player for the Mariners while moving around each of these positions.
Although the Mariners off-season should still be considered a failure, this move actually makes sense!
WHAT ELSE SHOULD THE MARINERS DO THIS OFF-SEASON?
