No Need to Worry about Jackson Holliday

Top rated MLB prospect Jackson Holliday will be the first to tell you that he did not have the start to his MLB career that he expected. To say that Holliday struggled during his first glimpse in the majors would be an understatement. But, to all the Orioles fans, there is absolutely no reason to be concerned.

Holliday collected 2 hits in 34 at bats during his short stint in the majors. He never quite looked comfortable at the plate and struck out 18 times. That is a lot of strikeouts in that span.

Let us not forget that Holliday is only 20 years old. The fact that he even made it to the majors at that age is a testament to the kind of player he is. A lot of young players platoon between the minors and majors at a young age before sticking with the big club. Holliday will be no different.

Holliday was absolutely shredding the minors before his call up. In 50 at bats at the Triple A level, Holliday recorded 18 hits (.300 average) with 2 home runs and 9 RBI’s. During those at bats he struck out 9 times. I would be way more concerned if the high number of strikeouts were occurring at both the minor and major league levels. That simply isn’t the case. This demonstrates a player that was simply caught up in the moment, likely trying a little too hard, and as a result was not comfortable at the plate.

You could argue that the Orioles should not have called up Holliday so soon. I tend to agree with that. However, the Orioles have done the next best thing. Send him down to AAA, let him tear up the minors, build up his confidence, and then when he returns to the Majors, he can demonstrate why he is such a promising prospect.
