Trevor Zegras: A Replacement for Johansen on the Avalanche?

In a previous article we discussed how Ryan Johansen is a misfit on the Colorado Avalanche. We started looking at possible replacements for Johansen with Elias Lindholm of the Calgary Flames. Up next – Trevor Zegras.

The Ducks find themselves in an odd predicament with Zegras. The last contract negotiations between the Ducks and Zegras were rather tense. Although they have player control for the next several years, the situation reminds me a lot of the Colorado Avalanche and Ryan O’Reilly years ago. Remember in that situation O’Reilly was eventually shipped out to Buffalo as the Avalanche feared they wouldn’t be able to sign him long term. The Ducks may be fearful that the last negotiations caused resentment between the player and club.

Couple the contract situation with the fact that the Ducks have a log jam at center. Leo Carlsson and Mason McTavish are Bonafide top 6 centers going forward. This also does not factor in the fact that the Ducks will have a lottery pick in an upcoming draft full of highly touted centers. The Ducks could very well trade Zegras to address areas of need and expedite their rebuild.

How about Sean Behrens, Oscar Olausson, and a 1st round pick for Zegras. This should help both clubs tremendously. The Ducks not only get a pick but also two prospects – 1 on defense and 1 on the wing. The Avalanche obtain a center that fits their play style and can play behind MacKinnon for the next several years.

WHAT DO YOU THINK – ZEGRAS TO THE AVS?

  1. I think he would fit for sure. Especially since the Avs haven’t been themselves lately. They lost part of their heart with Eric Johnson leaving. Maybe an infusion of proven young talent could give them a lift.
