Father time catches up with us all eventually. Has it finally caught up to Alex Ovechkin?
Ovechkin is only 68 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals. For a while, it seemed to be a certainty that Ovechkin would break the record. This year has shed some doubts on that.
Ovechkin has only 5 goals so far this season. That is surprisingly low for this point in the season. Ovechkin finds himself near the top of goal totals year after year. This year however, Ovechkin is not even in the top 100 players in goals scored. A few players that have more goals than Ovechkin this year: Sam Lafferty, Eeli Tolvanen, Colton Sissons, Jason Dickinson, and a crop of rookies including Dmitri Voronkov and Tye Kartye. Ouch!
The question…Is Ovechkin aging out or is it simply a result of an uncharacteristically low shooting percentage of 5.3%? For reference, Ovechkin’s shooting percentage is typically in the 13-16% range.
My personal opinion: I think Gretzky’s record is safe!
WILL ALEX OVECHKIN BOUNCE BACK THIS YEAR? WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I would like to say that Gretzky’s record is safe, but I’m thinking Ovechkin will have a strong finish to the season at 20-30 goals. He could be a shell of his former self and just be a 20 goal a year guy and break it as long as he stays healthy.
