Have you ever wondered what the term “Flex” means when it comes to a hockey stick. I was certainly confused when I started playing hockey.

In simple terms, “Flex” refers to the stiffness of your stick. Flex refers to the amount of pressure (in pounds) that has to be exerted to bend the stick 1 inch. The higher the flex on the stick the stiffer the stick will be.

As a general rule, a player can find an appropriate flex by taking his or her body weight and dividing by 2. For example, if a player weighs 200 LBS an appropriate flex may be 100. Remember – this is just a guideline.

Many players prefer a specific flex based primarily on their play style and position. It is not uncommon for defensemen to opt for a higher flex in the 100’s. This gives them a stiffer stick for battles in front of the net and maximum power on their slap shots. On the contrary, a player may choose a lower flex perhaps 77 or 85 if they prefer quick wrist shots. A lower flex stick will typically be a little more “whippy” and allow for quicker shots and accuracy.

It all comes down to preference; try some different flexes and see what works for you and your play style.

  1. It’s always amazing to see just how much a hockey stick bends when watching a player shoot in slow motion!
