Two Quarterbacks in Pittsburgh

You can say that the Pittsburgh Steelers are having a productive offseason. The Steelers signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and then traded for young and promising quarterback Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears.

The move leaves the Steelers with two quarterbacks who are capable of holding a starting position. So the question is…does this move makes sense? Let’s break down the moves.

Both Quarterbacks at face value are an improvement over last year’s starter, Kenny Pickett. By the way, Pickett is now looking for a fresh start as the backup for the Philadelphia Eagles. The biggest pro for these moves is the cost to acquire the players. Fields was acquired from Chicago for a 6th round pick. A low draft pick for a player who many believe can become a franchise quarterback. Every team in the NFL should have been willing to make that deal. In fact, I’m a bit surprised a franchise didn’t offer the Bears more for the young quarterback.

Wilson was signed by the Steelers to a one-year contract paying him 1.21 million dollars. The Denver Broncos are still on the hook for the remainder of Wilson’s $39 million salary – ouch! Wilson obviously struggled with the Broncos during his tenure there, but if he can return to some form of the player he was with the Seahawks this will be a steal!

The moves give the Steelers two capable quarterbacks for an extremely low cost. The savings can be used to bolster the rest of the Steeler’s roster. Wilson will likely be named the starter, but if he falters, Fields will be able to step up and fill the role. Talk about insurance!

If Wilson is able to return to the player he once was, he can serve as a mentor for Fields who should now be viewed as the future starter in Pittsburgh. There are no negatives to the moves as long as both players are able to buy into the present and long-term plan.

I would argue they now have the best quarterback tandem in the league.
