Authority Athletics recently wrote about the 3 winners of the NHL trade deadline. You can read that article HERE! Now, let’s look at the 3 teams that didn’t fare so well.
San Jose Sharks: Mike Grier might be making the blueprint for doing a rebuild the wrong way. The Sharks shocked everybody by trading away Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights. Not that I hate the idea of trading away Hertl; for the record I believe it was the right decision. However, the Sharks were somehow convinced to retain salary on Hertl’s multi-year contract. The last thing a rebuilding team wants is dead money on their cap – and the sharks will have that for the next 5 years. The Sharks are now retaining salary on Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, and Tomas Hertl! What did the Sharks get for their trouble – a center prospect currently playing in the SHL and a 1st round pick. That’s hardly a haul worthy of a player of Hertl’s caliber. The Sharks also failed to trade Mike Hoffman and Alexander Barabanov. Neither will likely be on the team next year and the Sharks lost the ability to obtain draft picks for their services, even if they were late rounders.

Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs desperately needed an impact defenseman for their playoff push. What was their solution? Joel Edmundson! Ouch! Edmundson is hardly an impact player and is a bottom pairing player at best. The Leafs also added a depth center in Connor Dewar from the Wild. Those are the two “impact” moves made by a club who is hoping to contend for a title. Better luck next year.
Boston Bruins: The Bruins didn’t do much of anything at the trade deadline to significantly impact their roster. You could say it’s not really their fault – the team lacked the assets needed to make a splash. However, you saw other GM’s around the league find ways to get creative or think outside the box. The Bruins added some grit by acquiring Pat Maroon and Andrew Peeke but I don’t see either having a significant impact on the club.
