The Sabres acquired promising defenseman Bowen Byram from the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday for center Casey Mittelstadt. Authority Athletics already looked at the trade from the Avalanche perspective so now let’s look at the trade from the Sabres viewpoint.

This is one of the trades that can go down as a win-win for both clubs. The Sabres operated from a position of strength to improve an area of need. The Sabres made it clear that they are building their forward core around centers Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens after signing both to long term deals. Mittelstadt was the player that was simply dispensable.

Acquiring Byram on the backend should be truly frightening for other NHL clubs. All of a sudden you look at the top 2 defense pairings in Buffalo and are met with the likes of Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Bowen Byram, and Mattias Samuelsson. That group is full of talent, and are all under 25 years old! A few years from now with further development you may look at that d-core as the best in all of hockey.

The addition of Byram just adds even more young talent to the Sabres roster. Let us not forget, the club is also going to make a high pick in this year’s upcoming draft. This team will be scary!
