Another NHL trade deadline has come and passed. It was a busy deadline with lots of high-quality players being moved. Here are the 3 winners of this year’s deadline:

Vegas Golden Knights: The Knights are the true winners of this year’s trade deadline. They started by obtaining the best available defenseman, Noah Hanifan. Hanifan was the only defender on the market capable of playing first pairing minutes. They also obtained Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals. Although I am not a huge fan of Mantha, he will definitely be a big body for the playoff push. Then, Vegas made the most surprising move of the deadline, acquiring Tomas Hertl from the San Jose Sharks. Hertl was not on anybody’s radar but is an excellent player. Somehow Vegas even convinced the Sharks to retain salary on Hertl’s multi-year contract. The Golden Knights are so much better than they were just a few days ago!

Colorado Avalanche: The Avalanche swung big at the trade deadline. They had to give up a lot by shipping off promising defenseman Bowen Byram but acquired skilled center Casey Mittelstadt in return. In making this move, the Avalanche secured a 2nd line center for several years to come. To replace Byram, the Avalanche landed Sean Walker from the Philadelphia Flyers. Walker fits in perfectly with the Avalanche play style. He jumps into the play, likes to be involved offensively, and is great on the penalty kill. To round out the deadline, the Avalanche acquired Brandon Duhaime from the Minnesota Wild and Yakov Trenin from the Nashville Predators. The Avalanche have been mediocre on the penalty kill this year and both forwards are great in this area. Not to mention, Duhaime and Trenin are wrecking balls and will be extremely tough to play against in a 7-game series.

Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes have always lacked that superstar player capable of taking over a game or scoring a clutch goal. Well, the search is over. The Hurricanes obtained Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a plethora of picks and players. Guentzel is a top goal scorer in the NHL with playoff pedigree. He will become the go to goal scorer for a Hurricanes team finally trying to overcome their playoff obstacles.

There you have it…the 3 winners of this year’s NHL Trade Deadline. Coming up tomorrow we will look at the 3 teams that didn’t fare as well.
